Man charged with poisoning children to extort Campbell's Soup
MIAMI, July 7, 2006 (AFP) - A man was arrested Friday and charged with allegedly poisoning his children in an attempt to extort Campbell's Soup Company, federal prosecutors in Atlanta said.
William Allen Cunningham, 40, "allegedly fed his children, then ages three years and 18 months, Campbells soup that he tampered with by placing foreign substances in the soup.
"All three times, the children were taken to the emergency room for treatment.
"On the third occasion, January 29, 2006, Cunningham allegedly fed the children soup tainted with the prescription drugs Prozac and Amitriptyline," both of which are antidepressants.
"Cunninghams daughter had to be life-flighted (by air ambulance) to a hospital in Atlanta, and this poisoning resulted in extended hospital stays for both children," prosecutors said.
Cunningham, of Stockbridge, Georgia southeast of Atlanta, was arrested Thursday, and will go before a judge for a formal reading of the charges, prosecutors said.
"This parent allegedly committed a horrific crime, putting foreign substances, including prescription drugs, in soup that he fed his young children on three different occasions, resulting in multiple trips to the emergency room, in hopes of getting money from the soup manufacturer," said head Atlanta prosecutor David Nahmias.
"In statements to police in Clayton County, he allegedly said he intended to get money by suing the makers of the soup, claiming the product was the cause of the childrens sickness.
"This case is serious and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," he said.
Cunningham also called Campbell's to tell them that the soup had made his children ill and that he would sue them.
He could spend as many as 75 years in prison, if found guilty of all charges, prosecutors said.
Campbell's soups have been made for 120 years in the United States and their familiar red-and-white labels were raised to pop-art status by painter Andy Warhol in 1962.
